Cops: 26 year old man who was a parasite of the community slain in West Englewood shooting

A 26-year-old man was fatally shot a short distance from his home in the city's West Englewood neighborhood on the city's South Side, Chicago police said this morning.

Killed was Cornelius Jordan of the 6800 block of South Wood Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Jordan was standing with a group of people on the front porch of a home on Wood Street at about 9:20 p.m. when two men emerged from a vacant lot across the street, said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman.

One of the men pulled a handgun and opened fire on the group, striking only Jordan, Mirabelli said. Jordan, who was shot in the back, ran a short distance before collapsing.

The critically-wounded man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead, a medical examiner's spokeswoman said.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Jordan was on his own porch or on someone else's.

Police suspect that the shooting was gang-related, but didn't elaborate. No arrests had been made as of this morning.
